The course follows the UCLES-approved CELTA syllabus (UCLES: University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate). During the course, candidates develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English. The course includes teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically written assignments. Syllabus overview:

  1. Language awareness.
  2. The learner, the teacher and the teaching/learning context.
  3. Planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English.
  4. Classroom management and teaching skills for teaching to adults.
  5. Resources and materials for teaching English to adults.
  6. Professional development for teachers of English to adults.
 
Course Structure
 

The intensive CELTA is a full-time 4-week course running 5 days/week. In addition to the days spent in school totalling approximately 140 hours, teaching trainees will be responsible for assignments to be completed outside of class time.The following requirements are included as an integral part of the program:

 
  • 134 contact hours between the candidates and the course tutors including:
    • Input
    • Tutorial support
    • Supervised lesson planning
    • 6 hours teaching practice for each candidate supervised by a course tutor
    • Feedback
    • Peer observation
  • 6 hours directed observation of lessons taught by experienced English language teaching professionals
  • An additional estimated 100 hours for required readings, research, assignments and lesson preparation
